Dog Toys For Aggressive Chewers

As a dog owner for years, I have had many different dogs in all shapes and sizes. There is one thing that all dogs love to do and that is chew things. It doesn't matter how small or large your dog is, they will almost all have some need to chew. Many dogs enjoy a small rawhide bone and will chew it occasionally for weeks but others may chew up even the largest and hardest rawhide in a matter of hours. These aggressive chewers have special needs and if those needs aren't met, you may end up losing a pair of $100 shoes, cords, table legs, and even couches. You need to make sure you are buying the right dog toys for aggressive chewers.

Rawhide chew toys come in many different forms and if you have a chewer, odds are you have bought most of them. The cheap ones come in bags of 6 or 12 and are made of ground and formed rawhide. These usually last a couple of minutes and seem more like a snack to your dog. They are best used as treats and given once in a while. A step up from those are the large knotted rawhide pieces. These are very durable and it takes a while for them to get soft. If you have a huge dog, they still won't last long but are a much better choice than the pressed or rolled kind. Many pet shops have these knotted rawhides in sizes from 3 ounces up to 3 pounds. It's fun to give a little dog a huge rawhide but they may become overly protective of it so you will have to take it away. That's not easy sometimes.

There are two great choices for aggressive chewers. The first one is called a “pressed bone”. These toys are made out of compressed rawhide and are very dense and heavy. It is hard for them to get soft so even the most chew crazy hound can bite on them for weeks. The second choice is rubber. All pet shops carry very durable rubber toys that are almost indestructible. You can stab them with a knife and they will still last for years and years. These are a great choice for permanent toys and it's good to add in some rawhides once in a while so your dog doesn't get bored.
